

One of these enemies is none other than Commandant Keris Veturia, Elias’s mother, whom the Blood Shrike is tasked to assassinate–only to find out that it was definitely not an easy feat at all. Her brokenness has pushed her into a merciless and conniving persona, hell bent on crushing any enemies that stand in her way. She tries to put together the prophecy like pieces of a puzzle, only to be led to different sorts of answers and choices she has to make in order to accomplish her mission.īlood Shrike : In this POV, you never once hear the name Helene Aquilla as the Blood Shrike, who has gone down the path of tragic family loss, pushes herself to obey the tyrant emperor Marcus who holds her sister, Livia, hostage as his Empress. She meets the Beekeeper, only to find out that in exchange for her promise of becoming a Scholar leader, he would help her seek out the answers to defeating the Nightbringer. When Shaeva makes a prophecy and instructs her to see the Beekeeper in Adisa, Laia immediately decides to go and find the answers she needs to bring down the Nightbringer and seek to undo his plans of finding the piece of the Star. Laia : Laia is once more reunited with her brother Darin, whom she has saved from the prisons of Kauf. In order to truly bond with Mauth, the magic that Elias must learn to harness, Elias slowly begins to realize that he has to make the choice of whether he wanted to help the ghosts pass on from the Waiting Place or if he wanted to step into the life that was once meant for him. Elias’s story arc becomes a huge test in learning how to surrender his past self and reconciling with his becoming the Soul Catcher, together with the responsibility and the burdens that the job entails. She warns him consistently that there may be limited time for him to grasp everything that she has to teach him.


Each of the stories intertwine in some ways, and in some ways the characters themselves have their own journeys.Įlias : Shaeva, a jinn who becomes Elias’s new mentor in all things related to soul catching, grows increasingly exasperated when Elias shakes her off time and time again to aid Laia in the raids to free the tribes, or to do something else that means personally to him.
